That's a curious argument, given that sqlheavy is *written* in Vala. ;-)
But I'd be interested what makes libgda worth looking into, and what it
may provide over sqlheavy.

From a quick look, libgda can support other databases, XML, threaded
access, meta data and GUI.
Does it have any search capabilities? It's not mentioned there. And it
says it's impossible to access the underlying database API.
