I recently heard about Yorba and Shotwell and installed Shotwell in
Ubuntu 10.4. Compared to F-spot it's pretty good and it is really
responsive. I also plugged in my Cannon 40D to import my photos. But
it did not work. However, Nautilus and F-spot could download the pics.
Before filing a bug, I thought I would try to fix it myself and have
checked out the source from subversion. There seems to be some bug in
initializing the camera through libgphoto but I haven't pin-pointed it
yet. I'll do some work this weekend and if I don't make any progress,
will file a bug.
Regarding the RAW support, GEGL based work flow would be the best :-)
In the meantime, I would probably prefer use of libraw if I used
Shotwell. I am a (very) amateur photographer and I do most of my
photoprocessing in my MacbookPro using the software that came with
Cannon (Digital Photo Professional). I do not own Photoshop and find
that the simple program suffices my needs. The only modifications I
make on my photos are change brightness, contrast, tone, saturation,
and sharpness. I also modify histogram curves that correspond to
various picture styles -- landscape, portrait, faithful, etc. One
thing the Cannon DPP does not do is rotate pics by arbitrary angle (so
I can level the pics). However, the main reason I am beholden to my
Mac for my photography is the colour profile management. Hopefully,
some thought has gone into incorporating and managing ICC profiles.
Best,
Alaska
PS: Another thing for which I use my Mac is viewing and playing the
MIDI of Powertab files using TabView. I hope Fillmore will fulfill
this need someday. Good luck for you Yorba guys!
