Either that, or we could add a new sidebar item 'Publishing...', just 
like the existing item 'Importing...'.  It would be nice if both these 
items displayed progress bars (see http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/300 ).

Right.  Either locking the records or creating a temporary copy for 
publishing seem reasonable to me.
