[Shotwell] Contributing to Yorba/Shotwell

As I have plans to make some progress on this in the next couple of days and
would like to be organized from the start I'm wondering what would be the
best method of keeping the developers and community informed of progress,
and if all goes well submitting the files for inclusion in Shotwell?

Also, would the work I'm doing qualify as filling this
bug<http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1143>so that efforts are not
duplicated?

Finally, is it possible for a developer to chime in even if it's just to
give this the go ahead. I'd hate to begin work on this if they have other
plans.

While I won't move fast enough to make into .6 I think it would be awesome
if this could be in a .7 release down the line, depending on how far down
the line that actually is.
