The process I have been using, as an external contributor is:
* Assign myself to the ticket (in your case 1702)
* Get the code out of SVN trunk, as described in the download
source section on this page: http://yorba.org/shotwell/install/
* Implement the feature locally, making sure to run svn update on
a regular basis to have the latest changes
* Attach the output of svn diff to the ticket
I think the important thing is that the work you do be attached to a
ticket in Trac so that it doesn't come as a complete surprise when you
submit it. Also, having it in Trac means that it's easy to attach your
patch to the ticket, irrespective of whether you go the Launchpad or the
SVN route.
