I've just filed a ticket for showing/hiding the rule of thirds lines in 
Shotwell: http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1891 .

Shotwell does this today.  When the crop tool is open, you can press the 
button showing an arrow inside a box (immediately to the left of Cancel) 
to switch the crop rectangle between portrait and landscape modes.

There's a ticket for this at http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1881 .  This 
should be easy and so I'm quite sure it will be in the next release (0.6).
