Yes - we're interested in this too.  Some other GNOME applications do 
this already: for example, Rhythmbox can watch the user's music library 
directory for new music files.  And so it would be nice to have this 
capability for photos as well.  We actually do have a ticket for this: 
http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/374 .  This will probably not be in the 0.6 
release next month, but I think is a strong candidate for 0.7.
