I agree: this would be useful.  I've recently created a ticket for this 
at http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1941 .

As you probably know, Shotwell can import photos (but not yet videos; 
that's http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/855) from SD cards today.  We can't 
yet rename photos on import, but that might be nice, so I've created a 
ticket for that at http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1942 .

Syncing/sharing the library between machines 
(http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1292) is on the roadmap for Shotwell, but 
will probably not happen in the next couple of releases.  We haven't yet 
decided exactly how this work, but I agree it might be nice to be able 
to sync to network storage boxes via FTP or other protocols.
