Yes, this is a good workflow.  When you upload the patch to Trac be
sure to include a comment mentioning that.

We don't currently have an IRC channel, although it's something we've
considered in the past.  We're pretty good about responding to
questions here on the list -- feel free to use this as a resource for
developing patches and getting ideas where to dive in.
